I'll swap my Gucci for your Versace

Guest Blogger and Style Maven Anchyi Wei  talks 'designer goods swapping' with SNOBSWAP
photos provided by Emily Dang

Every fashionista has items in her closet that was a past love, that doesn't fit the same anymore, or just plain buyer's remorse.  Local swap parties are great, but it's often difficult to find those with similar style and eye for quality as the tasteful you.

Recently, I had the pleasure of working with the founders of Snobswap.com, a locally-based start-up to list previously-loved items from my closet.  Like other busy fashionistas, I never wanted to bother with taking photos, listing and maintaining my items online.  However, their Closet Concierge service, currently a pilot program, handled everything - Photos, price recommendations, product descriptions, listing, you name it.  All I did was pull items from my closet, handed over to Snobswap and the job was done.

I have now sold over 20 pieces on this website, and purchased a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps and an Anna Sui top at fraction of the retail price (hint: you can offer a price to your liking, if the asking price is too high in your opinion).  What's even better than designer pieces at a much lower price?  Getting them for FREE! I swapped an old Salvatore Ferragamo bag with this Marc Jacobs one from another user, which I've been using everyday since.

No wonder she's smiling!!!

Wanting to give back to the community,  Snobswap and I are donating a portion of proceeds from our sales to Becky's Fund, a locally based charity devoted to bringing Domestic Violence awareness.
You can shop items from my closet here.

A note from The Thrifty Fashionista:
Thank you Anchyi! I have been curious about Snobswap ever since I read about it in The Express paper. Sounds absolutely fabulous and EASY! I love that part of Anchyi's proceeds from SNOBSWAP will go toward Becky's fund.
I hope our readers out there will give SNOBSWAP a try. I know I will. Especially with Spring coming. Out with the Old and in with the newly swapped is definitely in order !

COAT CHECK !

It's almost time to pack away our coats on the east coast...WE HOPE! It seems like we're experiencing a never ending winter right now. It's March 27th and temperatures are still 30 degrees- sometimes accompanied with blistering wind.  UUGGHH!
I could hardly find anything style worthy to smile about until I found some pretty cool coats.
Now, these thrifty finds are making this brisk air a little more enjoyable!

Exhibit A:
A vintage tweed black and white coat that is reversable. The other side is black satin. Very nice for those festive outfits. It would definitely warm up your whole body in an LBD.
I got this coat at Reddz Trading for $50. The tag was labeled 'large' so I was a bit skeptical that it would fit me. I love black and white patterns but I knew if this coat drown me I'd look like I was wearing a comforter.
I tried it on and as the photos demonstrate, it does fit and it's pretty damn cool. I actually like that it's a bit oversized It keeps me nice and warm all the way past my things. It almost feels like a big blanket. I love the 50's style 3/4 length sleeves too. I can wear my long gloves or show off a cool sweater. Whichever one is just fine. I love the coat and the price was right.
This classic coat stay in my collection for years to come.

Photos : Len Rizzi
Exhibit B:  I was supposed to be looking for kitchen tile when I bumped into this tiny thrift shop. I told myself I'd give myself 15 minutes to find something, then I'd have to get back to finding tile. Well somewhere between 5-10 minutes I found this awesome cream colored wool coat. I loved the minimalist, boxy and modern silhouette. It's lined and very warm! Even with a few weeks left of winter, I knew I had to have it.
The tag looked like it was produced in the late 80's and it's American made (California). I was flabbergasted at the price too-$15!The original button on the coat was just plain and cream colored. I knew I could change the button to make more of a statement and it would instantly look better (and a lot more expensive). I added this rusted brass button to add that 'exclamation point' to this great coat. The button cost $3.98 at G st Fabrics which made the total spent for this classic coat $18.98. Gotta love it! And you can do the same. With Spring coming, there are sure to be mark downs on all coats from department stores to thrift shops. Button swapping is a super easy way to add that extra va va voom to any coat.

Well..you be the judge. Pretty awesome right?

Lessons learned
#1-It's never too early or late to buy a great coat. A classic coat can last you more than 10 years if taken care of properly
#2-When in doubt and you have a few 'extra' minutes, peek your head into that thrift store around the way to see if it's your lucky day
#3- Transform any coat with a fab button(s)

YEAR ROUND SKIN SAVERS UNDER 5 BUCKS !

Olive Oil Mask $4.79  SallyBeauty.com
Winter's almost over and I can't wait to finally bid it farewell. Cold winds combined with dry air from indoor heating systems rob our skin of moisture, wreaking havoc on our complexions. Over drying and flakiness can make skin appear lackluster. On top of that over drying can spur on breakouts by increasing oil production to compensate for the dryness.  Lovely right?  I noticed this happening to me last month and I knew it was time to do a little product switch up.

I've always had combination skin so I've used products that aim to create a balance between the t-zone and the drier areas like the cheeks.  For over a year now I've been using Queen Helene's Mint Julep mask. As you may remember,  I actually wrote about this product on the blog before. The mask provides a deep clean with clarifying kaolin and can actually double as a pimple spot treatment. This winter I started to feel that I needed a more balanced approach and a moisture boost. This winter, I didn't want to use a clarifying mask on my entire face.

Since I had luck with the Queen Helene brand I wanted to see if they had a formula for dry skin. I thought I could experiment with mixing or perhaps use it all over. I went to Sally Beauty supply and saw the Olive Oil mask on the shelf. Being Greek, I absolutely love olive oil! I eat it daily and I'd heard of it's nourishing qualities for hair and skin so I decided to give it a go.
For $4.79 I thought it definitely worth trying.

T.T.F VERDICT: The Greek poet Homer was definitely on to something when he called Olive Oil 'liquid gold'. Those of us who've tasted it already know this to be true. Now that I've applied it to my face I'm an even bigger fan. It is extremely hydrating. Affter being rinsed off my skin felt soft and subtly moisturized without leaving an oily residue.  It's creamy texture makes you just want to keep rubbing it ! I use it on the drier parts of my face and still use the mint julep formula on my t-zone.
Bottom line: Queen Helene Olive Oil mask is an awesome product that gives a lot of bang for the buck.

I absolutely could not get through this winter without these two Queen Helene masks. Thanks to them, my skin hasn't dried up like a prune but my blemishes have. For under 5 bucks they are a steal.  The mint julep formula is great for all skin types except very dry. You can mix both formulas as I do to make a perfect blend for combination skin or you can apply the mint julep for the t zone and then for the olive oil formula on the cheeks.

Extra tip:  If you want to prep your skin for a either mask, apply a scrub to exfoliate any flakiness and remove dead skin cells. This will make the mask more effective as you are allowing the product to reach the fresher newer skin cells thus penetrate better. My favorite is St Ives Blemish control scrub with salicylic acid. The granules are tiny (made from sand) so they are less likely to scratch the skin unlike larger granules like apricot kernels.
So what there isn't an aesthtician applying this on your face! The results might feel as if you just left the spa and your face will have a shiny glow that will convince you otherwise.

This MAY be the coolest thing EVER! - RAP video about thrift shopping

O.M.G some clever cheeky person out there made a rap song and hilarious music video about thrift shopping! Well not just any random person I should clarify. This is the work of Seattle hip-hop artist Macklemore. The song has a very catchy beat that you can dance too. And the lyrics are very funny!

A friend of mine sent this over to me a few days ago and it immediately made me laugh. Fair warning, the song is a tad vulgar at times but the lyrics are spot on. If you're a thrift shopper, you can identify with nearly everything he says. The chorus sings about only having $20 and looking for something that's going to make him an original. He's not willing to spend $50 on a t-shirt and he thinks trying to attract the ladies with labels is silly.

Chorus:
"I'm gonna pop some tags, only got $20 in my pocket. Uh Uh I'm huntin looking for a come up, This is F***** awesome".

This sounds like T.T.F anthem to me. This song perfectly expresses the jubilation I feel when finding a deal. It's absolutely awesome!

Be prepared to laugh and feel free to share :)

UPDATE:Since I wrote this post almost two weeks ago I have heard this song in two different clubs. Looks like this indie track is on it's way to being a global dance hit. Congrats to Macklemore on the success.
Who would've thought a song about thrift shopping would catch on the way it has?

UPDATE***- This song has a record breaking 194 MILLION YouTube hits!!!! WOWZERS!

T.T.F's BEST FINDS OF 2012

What better way to start the new year than to reflect on your greatest moments of 2012? Rummaging through my closet the past two months, I realized how many great pieces I've been lucky to find this year. I decided I wanted to share my most coveted finds of 2012 with all T.T.F fans so I got together with my friend and fellow photographer Len Rizzi to shoot them. Some items I've photographed on a white background alone and others Len insisted we shoot on myself. I'll admit the shoot was encouraged by Len because he was mortified at my photos taken in the dressing room for my Tari boutique post. For the record I agreed with him 100%. Those dressing room photos... not so good!

Last week we photographed more than 10 looks in one day. It was exhausting but a lot of fun.

Turtleneck- $10 Buffalo Exchange, Belt -$5 Garage sale, Pants $40- Vintage Guy Laroche -Secondi

From the deliberate to the completely random shopping excursions of 2012, I have found some pretty great things and at amazing prices. A handful of  looks I've stored away to shoot on models and a select group of fabulous women, but these particular pieces we decided to shoot are items I wear daily.  I decided there's no better time to put a face to The Thrifty Fashionista than the beginning of 2013.

Vintage Donna Karen wool jumper- $200-Secondi- Belt $40-Vintage- Shoes $35 Steve Madden, Necklace-$25-Vintage-Legendary Beast
Despite how much fun I look like I'm having, being in front of the camera is quite nerve racking for me. I'm used to being behind the camera and directing others how to pose. Doing those things myself makes me feel silly because I am not a model. I'm also pretty self conscious of my "curves". Nothing wrong with curves, but knowing how they photograph make me uneasy. With a master photographer like Len Rizzi, I knew I was in very capable hands and him being a friend as well, I felt free to let some of my inhibitions go and just have fun.

The Thrifty Fashionista blog was created to share my knowledge of beauty, skin care, makeup and fashion tips for clients and friends that have been asking me questions for years. It's also serves (hopefully) as a  source of inspiration.  It's goal is to demonstrate how beauty and fashion can enhance your life.  And 'enhancing' your life does not mean spending a lot of money. How you use these tools or 'gifts' as I like to call them is up to you. Which is precisely what I want everyone to take from this blog.

I highly doubt I'll be getting into the habit of photographing myself to show off my budget-friendly finds. The Thrifty Fashionista isn't a daily or weekly style blog. My primary goal is to bring you the best products and inspiration as often and as creatively as I can. However that evolves is exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold. So, with that being said - full speed ahead to 2013 ladies and gents.

Ciao for now !

I Scored at Reddz Trading company

(Photos : Violetta Markelou)

Let me start this post with a confession:
The first few times I browsed through the selection at Reddz trading company in Bethesda I was disappointed.  To be blunt, I thought their selection was just down right bad. Not enough vintage, not enough unique finds and not enough of anything I found lust worthy. Sure there were Chanel and Louis bags in their display cases but the first 3 times I went there treasure hunting, I  couldn't find anything that I wanted to covet or that was a steal of a deal.
Of course I was happy that the store opened on such prime real estate. As a 16 year veteran shopper of Mustard Seed in Bethesda, I always felt the need for more shopping options for us Thrifty Fashionistas out there. The more stores that offer cash or trade for clothes you don't want the better. Purging your closet of items your don't wear or want any longer and trading them for things you do want is a brilliant concept. You're recycling clothing (eco friendly) while updating your constantly evolving style all without compromising your wallet. Can you think of a more efficient, sustainable way to shop?

Even though I was disenchanted with my first Reddz experience,  I noticed their wide variety of designer jeans was fantastic. Most of them looked brand new and they had a great selection. I bought a few pairs of Joes, Citizens of Humanity and J Brand jeans all in one afternoon. These designer brands run over $125 a pair. At Redz,  I bought each pair for $40. Nice right?
I did alert followers T.T.F via my Facebook page about their fantastic jean selection but I left it at that. Months later and  a 7 hour closet cleaning spree produced 4 bags of unwanted clothing, I decided to go back to Redz and see what I can trade.
Well looky looky what I found!  A pair of barely worn purple patent leather Prada booties.
My purple patent leather Prada booties $70

Purple patent leather Prada. Can you say that 3 times fast ? They were standing there just staring at me saying "yes..purple patent leather is the new black. You can wear these with anything!" They had a $120 price tag and they fit like a glove. I was a little skeptical about the color but they looked so sleek and fit so well I absolutely had to buy them. I received a store credit of $50 for the items I brought in so I paid $ 70. Not too shabby eh?
My luck that day was stellar. I hardly ever find great shoes second hand In my size 6-Ever!
And it gets better.  There were a brand spankin' new pair of black suede L.A.M.B  high heels just on the other side of the table for $40. Perfect for the season and I was actually on the hunt for a black heel like this. It truly was a lucky day and I scored big time with two pairs of designer shoes.
Brand New L.A.M.B black suede high heel pumps $40
Before I go any further, I don't want to neglect such an important detail as the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff at Reddz. Beyond the amazing finds each member of Reddz staff is always helpful and friendly and it makes the whole shopping experience that much better. A special thanks to GiGi who is always scouring the store helping me uncover the best finds like a personal shopper.
Now back to the story...
A little over a week later I brought in another bag of clothing and Redz gave me another credit of $107. Reddz gives you 30% in cash for your items or 45% in store credit. I went with the store credit both times. On this excursion I spent all the credit within an hour and here's what I bought.
A navy blue patent leather pumps by Joan and David for $20, a dark blue pair of Joes jeans (new) $40, this fantastic ring $30 and these vintage earrings $30.
black enamel necklace $20

textured gold cuff bracelet $15
Joan & David navy blue pumps $20
CC Skye Marcasite statement ring $30

vintage Robin Khan earrings $30
Yes, that's right. I cleaned out my closet, got some amazing things and paid $10.You can safely assume I'm officially a huge fan of Reddz trading company now.  Reddz says "Trade your clothes. Not your style." And I would have to agree 100%. Now go shop your closet. See what great items you aren't wearing (and are willing to part with) and go trade trade away!

What in the *bleep* is BB cream ???

What in the world is BB cream? You've probably been wondering too. I've seen this new product heavily advertised in Allure and Vogue with ads claiming perfect skin in minutes. A cream that simultaneously hides discoloration, acne scars, and improves the look of wrinkles. To keep it short and sweet : BB creams claim to combine skincare + makeup in 1 simple step.

After seeing ads for BB cream continuously the past few weeks I've been a little more than curious. Could this miracle cream potentially replace the need for foundation? Has technology finally arrived in delivering the ultimate beauty product? For someone with fair skin like myself and who likes a little color on my face year round (my main reason for wearing foundation), I remained skeptical. I've never really been a fan of tinted moisturizer either. Not enough coverage for my needs and the formulas I've tried would separate during the day thus look patchy. I've always opted for a light-to-medium coverage foundation for the purpose of adding a bit more color, hiding imperfections like acne scarring and creating a more even skin tone. So could this be a perfect hybrid of tinted moisturizer with pigments that could improve the look of skin instantly thus eliminating the need for foundation?
L'oreal Studio Secrets Magic BB cream $10.95 Drugstore.com

L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator SPF 15, Light $16.99 Drugstore. com

Of course being the curious mad scientist beauty junkie, I have to try it and see if this works! Lucky for us deal seekers, there are 4 formulations in the drugstore right now that we can try without breaking the bank.
But wait. Before you go running to grab a tube here's a quick history low down on what BB cream is.

BB cream stands for blemish balm or blemish base (apparently there's a copyright in Korea on the word "blemish"), so in Western markets it's beauty balm. It is a cosmetic item sold mainly in East and Southeast Asia, but as of May 2012 BB creams will be introduced to Western markets. Early arrivals in the US include Boscia, Clinique, Dior, Dr. Brandt, Estée Lauder, Garnier, Marcelle, Maybelline, Garnier, L'Oreal, Omorovicz, and Smashbox.
MAC Prep+Prime BB Cream $30 maccosmetics.com

BB cream is promoted as an all-in-one facial cosmetic product to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. It can be worn alone as a tinted moisturizer, over serum and moisturizer as a regular foundation, and under powder, depending on the desired amount of coverage.
BB cream was originally formulated in the 1960s in Germany by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek to protect her patients' skin after laser procedures and surgery. It was introduced to South Korea and Japan in 1985– where healthy-looking, porcelain skin is heavily prized.  Quickly, the cream was hailed as "the secret of Korean actresses," and was heavily endorsed by Korean celebrities.
So what took so long to get this cream to the US? I still don't know! UUGHH!

BB creams come in a variety of different formulations and is promoted as an all-in-one treatment. The coverage is often mineral-based, and is intended to both cover and treat blemishes such as acne, sun spots and age spots. And some formulations (like L'Oreal's Youth Code) have anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and skin plumping halyuronic acid. Several formulations (like Garnier's version) contain vitamin C.

-What people are saying about BB cream (Maybelline):
"I literally haven't felt this pretty in a long time. Not only do I feel like I am not wearing any makeup, but my skin is the perfect balance between dry and oily! It covers my dark spots under my eyes and covers up my acne marks beautifully. I have always been one for the natural look, so if you want to get something cakey, this is not for you. I feel beautiful. I have confidence. I love this product! Thank you Maybelline!"(drugstore.com)

-What people are saying about MAC's BB cream :
I purchased this on a hunch, and I absolutely love this stuff!!!! I normally like medium to full coverage foundation, but this with a little mineralize skinfinish powder gives a truly flawless finish. Blending with a brush, or with your fingers, and it is invisible. All you see is beautiful, glowy skin (and I have LOTS of redness!!)

L'Oreal Magic BB cream on top  L'Oreal Youth Code BB cream on the bottom rubbed in

The Thrifty Fashionista verdict
I tried L'oreal's Youth Code BB cream for a few days and I like it. Here are a few reasons why:
L'Oreal Magic BB cream on top  L'Oreal Youth Code BB cream on the bottom
Until now there wasn't a great tinted moisturizer to be found in the drugstore. I used a Neutrogena brand years ago but I found it to be a bit oily and the color wasn't quite right.
L'oreal's BB cream is hydrating and provides a nice sheer tint and contains vitamin B3, vitamin CG, Procysteine and Recoverin to reduce the look of dark spots. It offers an option to foundation while combining skincare and broad spectrum sun protection - a huge plus!
For someone who wears a light to medium coverage foundation daily, BB cream gives me a makeup alternative. It adds a sheer tint of color and adds luminosity. I feel comfortable wearing it on my 'off' days. Going to the gym, running errands or when I don't feel like putting on makeup, I'll be using BB cream. It doesn't feel heavy or oily. My skin feels hydrated and instantly looks radiant.
I would consider wearing BB cream daily with a little concealer and a loose powder if I don't need to cover any bumps or breakouts.
The only downside I can find right now is the lack of BB creams for dark skin tones. L'oreal's Magic BB cream offers 5 shades but there doesn't seem to be one for very dark skin. After trying this formulation on my hand alone I realized that it has a lot more white and illuminating properties and it seems to be more opaque. I think this is a nice quality for fair to medium skin tones. But for dark skin? I'm not sure. A fellow makeup artist colleague of mine called BB cream for dark skin a disaster. She said, "there are a lot of light bulb faces walking around New York. BB cream is not for everyone!"
Perhaps for darker skin BB cream can be mixed with their regular foundation? It could work but it needs to be tested and used to the comfort level of each woman.
Nothing is worse than seeing a woman with a lighter or darker face than her neck! BB cream should be a nice addition to your regimen, not another product to confuse you. We have enough out there already! From my trials, I would use L'oreal's Magic BB cream as my skin care and then add a little powder or mix it with foundation. L'oreal's Youth Code BB cream I would apply as part of my skin care and to provide light coverage on my off days.
I think everyone woman deserves a makeup alternative and if BB cream offers moisture and  sun protection, I think it's definitely worth a try.

T.T.F UPDATE - So I've been using L'oreal's Youth Code BB cream now for over a week and I have to say.....I really like it. I know I said that a few paragraphs ago but I just wanted to say a few more things.
First, I notice that I'm not wearing foundation daily. I find myself reaching for the BB cream! BB cream gives me a little coverage and some nice color and with my skin being in good shape lately, I am fine with the what it provides. I put on concealer under my eyes and over a few spots and a little Makeup Forever HD powder and I am done! I really like that I am not wearing makeup (foundation) all over my face everyday. So, I am officially a FAN.

The other thing I wanted to note is that L'oreal's Magic BB cream is quite different than the Youth Code formula. It just dawned on me that this formulation is very similar to a product I sold in my early makeup days with Prescriptives. A little over ten years ago Prescriptives launched a product line called 'Magic'. The line included pearl iridescent liquid, and cream to be used alone or to mix with foundation. It promised to hide redness, acne scars and dark spots and immediately give glowing skin. Hmmmm... looks like L'oreal is recycling this idea! I think this is a great thing because (to my knowledge) a product like this hasn't been available in the drugstore. L'oreal's Magic BB cream is much like the liquid 'Magic' I used to sell except it combines a moisturizer and SPF. It also seems to darken and adapt to your skin tome when you rub it in. I like the luminosity it instantly gives the skin and I will definitely use under my foundation.
For me, these two L'oreal BB creams are here to stay. I'll implement both of these creams in my beauty routine going forward. I don't see BB creams as just another product to think about but rather a great addition to our skincare regimen. It just gives us ladies that much more freedom and power to look how we want, when we want. And this is a great thing!
